Lone Trail
Native American Cigar Label by Schmidt & Co., New York, 1901.
Full color lithographed 10" x 6" inner label with gold-embossed highlights. The bust of a noble Indian chief in full ceremonial regalia rests upon a bow and is flanked by scenes of forest and plain. The American Indian was a stock advertising device for cigar manufacturers given his association with the dubious gift of tobacco. Slight wear to one corner, else near mint. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Black Americana Cigar Label by S.R. Kocher, Wrightsville, Pennsylvania.
A full color lithographed 4.25" x 4.25" outer label with embossed brand name having gold edging. Two street urchins, one black and one white, are shown seated together. Despite his extreme youth, the white kid is holding a lit cigar. Both are probably second grade dropouts. Clipped corners as made. Near mint.

Club House
Cigar Label by the Moehle Litho. Co. of Brooklyn, New York.
A full color lithographed 9.75" x 6.5" inner label with gold-embossed brand name, prize medals, and border. A stately Victorian lakeside retreat basks in crepuscular lighting that evokes the complete serenity most of us find elusive. This dominant image is supplemented by secondary insets of equally pleasant subjects. To the left is a vignette of gentlemen relaxing on wicker furniture, while a yacht under full sail is depicted on the right. Excellent condition. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Gold Hunter
Inner and Outer Cigar Labels by George Schlegel of New York.
A lithographed and embossed 9" x 6" inner label showing "The Independent Gold Hunter on His Way to Klondike" walking on the railroad tracks from his home in Philadelphia. He is equipped with the shovel, pan, scales, tools, and provisions that he knows he will need. A road sign marked "The Horse Shoe Bend" gives the mileage to various locales such as "To Philadelphia 242" and "To Klondike 4295." The slogan "I Neither Borrow Nor Lend" is printed below the image. Accompanying this label is a beautiful matching outer label, 4.5" x 4.75", with the same design elements as the inside label. Both labels are in excellent condition with only very light age toning at the margins. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels. (Total: 2 )

General Hooker
1896 Sample Cigar Label by Schmidt & Co. of New York.
A lithographed 7.75" x 6" inner label with fancy gold and silver embossed decorative elements around a portrait of the (in)famous Union Major General Joseph Hooker. "Fighting Joe" Hooker had a long and controversial career as a U.S. Army officer who had a tendency to tip the bottle a bit too much. His headquarters at Falmouth, Virginia were once described as a combination of a "bar-room and a brothel." Though often stated as fact, the use of the word "hooker" as a slang term for prostitute did not come from the band of prostitutes that followed his division around though they were supposedly referred at the time as "General Hooker's Army" or "Hooker's Brigade." This sample label with Civil War and military appeal has the prices printed at the bottom stating that these were available from Schmidt & Co. for $2.50 per 100 (inside) and $1.00 per hundred (outside), also blank. Near mint condition.

Lime Kiln Club
1883 Black Americana Cigar Label by Mensing & Stecher of Rochester, New York.
A lithographed 8" x 6" inner label with a caricature image of a very boisterous group of blacks at a lodge meeting. The moderator is trying to get order while some of the members talk and fight amongst themselves with one even holding a pistol. There is a trademark on the bottom of a whiskey barrel in the picture that may possibly be for the Ithaca Cigar Manufacturing Co. for whom the label was made. Interestingly, this label was based on a racial parody book by "M. Quad" (actually newspaper columnist and satirist Charles Bertrand Lewis) titled
Brother Gardner's Lime-Kiln Club.
A popular and scarce label with appeal to collectors of black memorabilia. Near mint. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Forest
Wildlife Cigar Label by Ed. L. Graef, Newark, Ohio.
Full color lithographed 10" x 6.5" inner label with gold-embossed brand name and border accents. Three deer standing by an enormous oak turn to watch a quail startled by a fox. This sylvan tableaux is rendered in deep, rich colors that compliment the liberal use of gold foil on this label. Excellent condition. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Snow Belle
Cigar Label by O. L. Schwencke, New York.
A full color lithographed 10" x 6" inner label with gold-embossed highlights. A young girl's rosy pink cheeks and golden curls add a touch of warmth to this otherwise wintry label. Scenes of a sleigh-ride and a frozen stream flank the subject. Light browning, else excellent condition. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Gold Hunter
Cigar Label by George Schlegel of New York.
A lithographed and embossed 9.75" x 5.75" inner label showing "The Independent Gold Hunter on His Way to Klondike" walking on the railroad tracks from his home in Philadelphia. The Klondike Gold Rush (or stampede) took place in 1897-98 after a rich placer gold deposit was found in Bonanza Creek in the Yukon Territory of Canada (just east of Alaska) in 1896. News reached the United States and thousands of "wannabe" gold miners took off north to Alaska to make their fortune. This label likely dates from that very period. Excellent condition with only very light foxing. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.
