Ben-Hur
Cigar Label by Consolidated Lithographing Corporation of Brooklyn.
A stunning lithographed and gold-embossed 8" x 6.5" inner label picturing a chariot driver and four powerful white steeds. The brand was from the Wm. Tegge & Co. Makers of Detroit, Michigan. Originally
Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ
was an historical novel by Lew Wallace published in 1880. It told the story of a Judean aristocrat enslaved by the Romans under Tiberius, his bitterness after release, and his redemption upon meeting Christ and seeing the crucifixion. The book was a huge hit and spawned a Broadway play in 1899, silent films in 1907 and 1925, and, of course, the 1959 film starring Charlton Heston that won 11 Oscars. This label was likely manufactured in the same time period as the silent film versions. Near mint condition with just a small amount of light toning in the upper left corner not affecting the image. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Cuban Cousin
Cigar Label by Jacob Stahl, Jr. & Co. of New York.
A full color lithographed 10" x 6" inner label with gold-embossed brand name and decorative embellishments. A fashionable and ever-so-grateful Cuban beauty celebrates her island's recent liberation from Spanish rule. She clutches a large Cuban flag to her breast and is flanked by shields bearing Cuba's Arms. Smaller vignettes to the left and right, respectively, show a departing American warship and a tobacco field ready to harvest. Near mint. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Daz-Lar
Cigar Label by Schmidt & Co., New York.
Full color lithographed 10" x 6" inner label with gold-embossed accents. The brand name of these cigars is presumably a pun in that a dazzling 1890s fashion queen dominates the label. She holds a colorful bouquet and stands before a fancy Grecian screen. Excellent condition.

Neptuno
Cigar Label by Schumacher & Ettlinger, New York.
Full color lithographed 9.5" x 5.75" inner label. The art here carries an 1884 copyright and is unusually liberated for the Late Victorian era. A bare-chested and decidedly sexy personification of Cuba presents a tobacco leaf to a soggy King Neptune rising from the deep. In the distance is a harbor, possibly New York, sporting an early suspension bridge. Crease on upper right corner, else very fine condition. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Leader
Spanish-American War Sample Cigar Label by O. L. Schwencke, New York.
Full color lithographed 9" x 6" inner label with gold-embossed highlights. The central figure here is Major General Nelson A. Miles (1839-1925) who was the U.S. Army's ranking officer during the Spanish-American War. Miles, although held on a tight leash by President McKinley, was a well-established military hero by 1898. The general's glowing service record included receiving the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Civil War as well as victories over great Indian chiefs like Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Geronimo. Amid American and Cuban flags, Miles is flanked by two smaller vignettes celebrating the war on land, as well as sea. This item should be of interest to militaria collectors as well as those primarily interested in cigar labels. A few very light stains, else excellent condition.

Remember the Carpathia 10¢
Cigar Label by F. M. Howell & Co, of Elmira, New York.
A printed 8.5" x 6.25" inner label picturing the RMS
Carpathia
surrounded by a decorative flowered memorial border with gold trim. Actually the ship pictured is really not the
Carpathia
as it has an American flag and two funnels (the
Carpathia
had only one). Built for the Cunard Line as a transatlantic passenger ship, the
Carpathia
first achieved public attention when, in 1912, it rescued 706 survivors at sea from the sinking of another famous ship, the RMS
Titanic.
On July 17, 1918, it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Ireland by a German submarine. The HMS
Snowdrop
was able to rescue 157 passengers of its passengers and the surviving crew. This rare label should appeal to naval and World War I collectors and is in about excellent condition with some minor age toning and handling.

American Commerce
Circa 1900 Cigar Label with Morgan Dollar Motif.
A handsomely lithographed and embossed 10" x 6.25" inner label with gold trim. The design features the American bald eagle on the reverse of the Morgan design silver dollar coming alive, standing on a red, white, and blue shield, with beautiful embossing on the wing feathers. The dollar has a gold highlighted beaded border that is surrounded by oak (symbolizing strength) and olive (symbolizing peace) branches with gold trim. The Morgan dollar is one of the most beautiful and highly-collected of all U.S. coins. The coins were minted from 1878 to 1904 and then again in 1921 making it likely that this label is from 1900 or before. An excellent addition to any coin or cigar art collection. Very fine condition with a light stain at the lower right well away from the image. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

American Twins
1898 Cigar Label by American Lithographic Co.
A colorful 4.25" x 4.5" outer label lithographed by Witsch & Schmitt of New York. The Spanish-American War took place in 1898 and gave rise to a major swell of patriotism in the United States. This label certainly capitalizes on this national pride with two beautiful women in red, white, and blue patriotic dress wearing caps posed in front of American and Cuban flags. The ladies' hair curls are nicely embossed, and there are gold embossed highlights on the title as well as several of the devices. Condition is excellent with just a tiny bit of surface soiling only visible when held at an angle.

Red Dandies
American Indian Cigar Label by Schmidt & Co., New York, 1901.
Full color lithographed 10" x 6" inner label with gold-embossed highlights. A magnificent period piece featuring children dressing and behaving as adults. Shown are a Native American lad in buckskins and feathers striking a match for a dapper young fellow in tuxedo and top hat. All in all, a very pleasing, if unrealistic, tableaux. Slight aging to paper, else near mint. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Sally Franklin
Cigar Label Showing Benjamin Franklin.
Full color lithographed 4.5" x 4.5" outer label with gold-embossed highlights. An elderly Benjamin Franklin and a male guest are shown being served tea by a young woman. Below the scene is a close-up of the lady, Franklin's daughter Sarah "Sally" Franklin Bache (1743-1808). The portrait is taken from a 1793 oil painting by John Hoppner, which now hangs in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Scenes such as that depicted on this label are usually fanciful excursions; however, Sally Franklin Bache actually did take care of her father during his declining years. Rounded corners and scalloped edges as made. Mint condition.

The Invincible Schley
1898 Sample Cigar Label by Schmidt & Co. of New York.
A lithographed naval-theme 7.5" x 6" inner label picturing "Com. Winfield Scott Schley" in full uniform with the sea and his ships in the background. U.S. and Cuban shields, oak leaves, a sword, an anchor, and the stars and stripes are all incorporated into the decorative gold-embossed border. Schley had a long and distinguished career in the service of the U.S. Navy and was a popular hero of the Spanish-American War for his sinking of the Spanish Squadron. He was awarded the rank of admiral in 1899, and he retired in 1901. A 1901 naval court of inquiry (convened at his request) praised his role in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, but criticized him for various mistakes he made in the battle situation and for disobedience to a dispatch. Prices and ordering information are found near the bottom margin of this sample label. Near mint condition.

Bryant
1899 Sample Cigar Label by Schmidt & Co of New York.
A lithographed 9" x 6" inner label picturing a portrait of the white-bearded poet and journalist surrounded by books, a globe, an inkwell, and patriotic symbols with gold-embossed decorative devices around. Bryant's ancestors on both sides came to America on the
Mayflower.
He studied law and was admitted to the bar, but poetry and journalism were his true loves. His poetry was in the English romantic style and expressed a strong love for the native New England countryside. He became editor of the
New York Evening Post
in 1829 and remained in that position until his death in 1878. A staunch abolitionist, he was a founder of the Republican Party and a supporter of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. This label has stock numbers and ordering information at the bottom showing that 100 sets of inside and outside labels could be ordered from Schmidt & Co. for only $2.90! Near mint condition.

Chief Joseph
Cigar Label by Petre, Schmidt & Bergmann Lithographers of New York.
A lithographed 10" x 5.75" inner label with gold-embossed highlights imploring us to "Smoke 'Chief Joseph.'", a trademark registered by Chas. Breneiser's Sons. Chief Joseph's dignified portrait appears in the center with two other scenes, one on either side. Chief Joseph was leader of the "non-treaty" Wallowa band of Nez Perce Indians during the period in which the U.S. Army, under General Oliver O. Howard was trying to forcibly remove Joseph's band to a reservation in Idaho. Joseph always sought a peaceful solution to the conflicts between his people and the government. His retreat of 1700 miles from the pursuing U.S. soldiers is legendary, but he finally was forced into surrender on October 5, 1877 to General Miles after a fierce five-day battle. His reported words of surrender are legendary: "Tell General Howard I know his heart...I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever." In later life, Joseph spoke eloquently for his people against the injustice of U.S. policies. He died in 1904 "of a broken heart" (according to his doctor). This impressive label is in excellent condition. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

He won the 1888 election though he received 100,000 less popular votes than incumbent Grover Cleveland. His portrait is bordered in an embossed gold frame and surrounded by various symbols of commerce, industry, and trade. This label should have appeal to Civil War and political memorabilia collectors. Very fine condition with a small stain at the top margin not affecting the image.
