The North American Indian Volume Three
Being a Series of Volumes Picturing and Describing The Indians of the United States and Alaska.
Edited by Frederick Webb Hodge, Field research conducted under the patronage of J. Pierpont Morgan. (Edward S. Curtis, 1908), limited edition on Holland Van Gelder Zonen paper, folio (9.5" x 12.5"), unbound, 215 pages of text plus 74 photogravures (including color plates) missing the following plates (not included in the above total)- "When Winter Comes", "Shield (Ogalala)", "Iron Plume (Ogalala)", and "Custer's Crow Scouts". Volume three of this 20-volume set covers the following tribes: the Teton Sioux, the Yanktonai, and the Assiniboin. Plates and text pages are in excellent condition with all tissue guards present save for the plate "Elk Head and the Sacred Pipe Bundle" which is missing the tissue and has a minor dampstain in the margin. A very desirable volume with an extremely high "break-up" value.
Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) was born near Whitewater, Wisconsin and moved to Minnesota as a child. He became an apprentice photographer at age 17 and when his family moved again in 1887, this time to Seattle, he became partners in an existing photographic studio. It was 1895 when Curtis took his first portrait of a Native American- Kickisomlo, a chief's daughter in Seattle. In 1900 he was invited to join an expedition to photograph the Blackfeet Indians in Montana. Much of the rest of his professional career was spent on similar expeditions. He documented approximately 80 tribes taking thousands of images and even recording sounds on wax cylinders. Curtis stated his purpose was to document "the old time Indian, his dress, his ceremonies, his life and manners."
