DescriptionSuperb Saxon Garde Reiter Officer Parade Helmet. Considered by collectors to be the "holy grail" of helmets, this beautiful example features a brass skull and visors trimmed in silver with domed-rivets on the lobster-tail rear visor. Slightly convex brass chin scales and the appropriate Saxon and national color rosettes are secured to the helmet via trefoil cloverleaf bosses. The front plate, mounted to the helmet via threaded posts and secured by small nuts, is a gilded Saxon coat-of-arms upon a silvered guard star. There are no additional holes in the front of the helmet. Of course the most impressive feature of the helmet is the rampant-lion top secured to the body of the helmet by a winged nut. Four other holes appear in the top of the helmet to secure a spike for less formal occasions. Beneath the lion is the gilt "AR" (Augustus Rex) cypher of Saxony. Both the front and rear visors are lined in full red morocco leather. The helmet is complete with its 2-inch wide brown leather sweatband and silk top. A most impressive helmet.
Condition: Excellent. Showing little wear; the silver plating on the lion has darkened to a gray patina. From the collection of J.T. Hamrick, M.D.
