    Lincoln & Johnson: Awesome, Mammoth 41" x 54" 1864 Jugate Campaign Poster.
Without qualifications simply the BEST campaign display item for our 16th president! Marvelous, vivid color with large 12" portraits of Lincoln and his running mate, Johnson, who would succeed him in office. Bold red, white and blue "Union Nomination" at the top, a colorful figure of Columbia between the portraits and the candidates names in huge bold red letters below. Columbia is flanked by a fierce eagle, the temple of Liberty, and vignettes of America in peace and wartime and American commerce (including a Union iron-clad in the harbor). Condition is excellent, with only very minor restoration along the original fold lines.

This is one of just three known examples. One is in the collection of the New York Historical Society. That poster has the same configuration as the present example, and suffers from a large brown stain in the lower left hand corner. The other, a privately held specimen, has the added feature of a section below listing local candidates, however it is missing the all-important "Union Nomination" line at the top. That poster has undergone fairly extensive restoration, and we feel confident in saying that the example here is in the finest overall condition of the three. That poster is the centerpiece of what is perhaps the political hobby's leading Lincoln collection and is unlikely to appear on the market any time soon, if ever. The poster has an interesting history, having appeared on an episode of the Antiques Roadshow. Several dogged collectors tracked down the owner, and a bidding war ensued until the present owner succeeded in purchasing it for $155,000 - at the time a record price for a Lincoln display item (since the three different Lincoln portrait flags have sold for more, one bringing in excess of $300,000).
For the advanced Lincoln or political collector or someone who loves American history and wants to possess the premier Lincoln display item, this offering presents what may well be a literal "once in a lifetime" opportunity.
